Fighting room-by-room through two luxury hotels, over dozens of bodies , the commandos came up against well-trained and determined gunmen.
The Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels - flagships of Indian luxury and among the best-known destinations for wealthy tourists and the city's elite - were stormed by the gunmen during a chain of militant attacks across India's financial centre that began Wednesday night and left at least 143 people dead.
After hours of intermittent gunfire and explosions at the Taj, the battle heated up at dusk when Indian forces began launching rescue operation at the hotel, where at least one militant was believed to be holed up inside a ballroom, officials said.
More than 150 people have been killed since gunmen attacked 10 sites in the city starting on Wednesday night, including 22 foreigners - two of them Americans.
By Friday evening, at least nine gunmen had been killed, one had been arrested and as many as six were still in the Taj Mahal,..
According to an Indian commando, uhe gunmen inside the hotel were well prepared and were able to use complicated weapons and grenades.
At least eight foreigners are known to have been killed so far and 22 more injured, two of them Americans.
The dead include three Germans, and one person each from Japan, Canada and Australia.
The nationalities of two more are unknown.
